そしてエリザベスⅡ世が薨去された後、最後に捧げられたのがこの
ラメント（嘆き）です。この時だけの特別な曲のようです。とても感動的
ですね。毎朝、吹奏していたパイパーが女王に捧げる最後の弔礼でした。

アン･シャーリー Anne Shirley の
腹心の友 bosom friend、
ダイアナ･バリー Diana Barry が
誠実で、善良で、だけどロマンティックではない
不良っぽいという以前の理想とはまったく異なるタイプの
フレッド･ライト Fred Wright と結婚式を挙げます。
映画の中では、 この Oh Promise me が
使われていますが、作者のモンゴメリーは実際に
この歌を想定していたものかな・・・。
「アンの愛情」の中で記述があったでしょうか？
第一巻 Anne of Green Gables が発表されたのは
1908年です。
この歌は１８９０年に歌詞付き楽譜が
大ヒットしていますから、時間軸の関係では
牧師の妻であるモンゴメリーが知っていただろうとは
充分に想像できます。
ただ、ダイアナとフレッドの挙式は
1886年6月のこととなっています。
（ジューン･ブライド ですね）
本の中では、この Oh Promise Me は存在していないことになります。
その意味ではありえないことです。
まぁ、そこまで厳密にすることはないでしょう。
モンゴメリーも、そこまでは突き詰めていなかったはずです。
現在でも歌われることがあるようですから
当時の祝歌の中から、この歌が映画で採用された理由は
恐らく、ただひとつ。
現代人の感覚でも違和感なく自然に聴ける祝歌
という選択の結果だったと想像できます。
そうは言っても
それでも時間の流れが早い現代では
この19世紀末の歌は、かったるいというか
ちょっと感覚がずれているかもしれません。
宗教的な意味合いがまだ大きい時代の結婚式ですから
仕方がありません。
コミックオペレッタ「ロビン･フッド」の中の
１曲だと言いますが。
現代のウエディングソングとしては
「ウエディングソング 隠れた名曲」など
ほかのページでかなり紹介していますが
たとえば・・・ A love until the end of time はいかが？
こちらの曲は、神へのリスペクトのもとというより
互いへのリスペクトが感じられます。

伏線として上手くいかされていくなら、まぁ、それもありでしょう。
ですが、ただ、あれだけのことで終わるなら
こなれの悪いご都合主義となってしまう・・・。

名前にこだわりがあることを強調していますね。
はなと花子では、子がついたほうが
カチッと格調高く響くようです。
女性の名前が、サザエさんのお母さんの「フネ」とか
ひらがな二文字が多かった時代
子 がつくと、やっぱりカッコいい感じがしたことと思います。
(天皇家にお嫁に行くなら、 子 がついている女性のようです）
ただ、花子だと、中国では こじき になってしまうと
父から聞いたことがあります。
ま、日本だから、いいか。
花子が「ご不浄」に行くと言って、瓦斯燈の下
お父さんと鉄柵ごしに話をするシーンがあります。
その時、スコット先生の部屋から聞こえてきた歌は・・・。
ウィキによると、オリジナルは
イングランド民謡の The water is wide といいます。
歌詞は同じですが、O Waly, Waly とも呼ばれたそうです。
（Waly は、悲しみから来る叫び、の意味のようです）
メロディといい、雰囲気といい
おなじみの古雅なグリーンスリーヴズ と共通するものがあります。
この歌も同じほど古く
17世紀にまでさかのぼることができるそうです。
風俗こそ５年、１０年で移ろいますが、
人間そのもののあり方って、実は同じようなものです。
賛美歌の扱いを受けることもあったようで
When love is found というタイトルになっています。
別れた恋人を心に残しながらも、ミッションに尽くす
スコット先生の心には響くものがあったことでしょう。
歌ったのは賛美歌ヴァージョンではないようですが。
神の愛、そして神への愛が歌われています。
ところで、花子とアンに続く マッサン でも
この歌を エリー が歌っていましたね。
評判が良かったから、またやるゾと思ってました^^
エリーが歌うなら、全然、おかしくないもの。

伝説のフォークシンガー、ピート・シーガーが採り上げ
ピーター・ポーﾙ＆マリー（P.P.M.)が後に続きました。
The water is wide でも、There is a ship でも
二人の間に水があって会うことがかなわない
といった内容です。となるとニュージーランドのマオリ族の

実は There is a ship の中に
The water is wide という歌詞が出てきます。
スコット先生が歌っていた箇所は、ちょうど、その
ヴァースだったようです。訳してみましょう。
冒頭が The water is wide です。

P.P.M.のマリーのパフォーマンスです。
タイトルが最も変化したのは、ノルウェー出身の歌手、
シセルの Summer snow です。
歌の内容もオリジナルを離れ、様変わりしています。
広末涼子と堂本剛のドラマ
「サマースノウ Summer snow」のテーマ曲となりました。
悲しげな笛の音は、ザンフィルが吹くパンフルートです。
魔を払い、清めてくれるような鈴の音がリズムを刻み
しかも、いかにも幸せであれ、とでも願うかのようで、
とても素晴らしく、さっそくCDを買い求めました。
そのヴァージョンは youtube では見つかりません。
下に紹介する動画の音は、基本的に同じです。
このサウンドをベースに、日本人アレンジャーが独自に
ドラマ用にオリジナルのものとなるよう手を加えたかと記憶します。
あ、紅白歌合戦でソプラノ歌手、鈴木慶江が歌ったときは
There is a ship として紹介されました。
あるテレビ番組のエンディングテーマとして流れていて
こちらも、CDを買いましたヨ。
紅白で聴けたときは、なんとなく嬉しかったナ。
ほかに多くの日本人歌手が採り上げているようです。
CDでもコンサートでもいいですが
好きなら、アーティストにお金で少しでも恩返しをしたいです。
利用するだけ、というのは
音楽を愛する気持ちとしては、どうかな。
気持ちがすさんでくる気がしてサ・・・・。

When the Pipers Play バグパイプ奏者が演奏するとき
というタイトルで、下の動画でパフォーマンスが繰り広げられます。

たしかによく似ていて、やはり同じ根を持つ
別ヴァージョンと納得させられます。

聞いたこと、ありますよね♪
ただねぇ、スコットランド兵の残虐さも世界的に
知られています。敵だからなのかなぁ。

Auld Lang Syne(オールド･ラング・ザイン）はおなじみの「蛍の光」。
ハイランドダンスが踊られると普通より早いテンポになります。
ゆっくり踊るのって、すごく体力を消耗しますもんね。
ハイランドダンスは本来、男のものだそうです。
戦争での勝利を祝った踊りだそうです。
いつも爪先立ちをしていて大変そう。
ハイランドとは、イギリス本当の一番北の地方。
Highlands と呼ばれる地域で、まぁスコットランドの
北半分といった感じ。
2014 年のRoyal Edinburgh Military Tattoo。
最後を締めるのはオールド･ラング･ザイン。
しっとりとした演奏もありますが、これもアップテンポ。
やっぱりハイランドダンサーたちがいますね。
ちなみにキルトはハイランド地方でも、ハイランド 高地 だけのもの。
スコッチウィスキーは緑豊かなローランド 低地 だけのものだそうです。
でも、ハリウッドでは低地の人間もキルトを着けるのでしょうね。
日本人がメガネと出っ歯とカメラが特徴づけられるのと同じように。
ちなみに肩にかける格子縞の布はプラッドと呼ばれる。
嵐が丘で知られるヒースはヘザーとも呼ばれる赤紫の花が代表的。
白いヒースは幸運の印で、スコットランドでは花嫁がブーケにします。
ヨーロッパ大陸から渡ったケルト系のピクト人が支配的で
財産と王位は女系に継承。ピクトの名はブリテンで防塁を築いて
対立関係にあったローマ人が、ピクティまたはペインテッド・ワンズと
呼んだことに由来。映画「９」では、ローマ軍第9連隊のワシの軍旗と
父の名誉を回復するため、若者がピクト人社会へと進入します。
ピクト人は体に灰を塗ったり、鳥の羽を頭に飾るなど米大陸のインディアンに
どこか似ていました。５世紀になるとアイルランドからケルト系スコット人が
渡来し、同じケルト系の旧来のゲール人と置き換わっていきます。
ピクト人の王国などを併合して９世紀にスコットランド王国が成立。
スコットランド人を意味するあだ名は、サンディ。
最後に。
ルーシー･モード・モンゴメリー Lucy Maud Montgomery は
書き物机の上に
アンのイメージモデルとして、アメリカの女性の写真を飾って
物語を書き紡いでいったとされます。
その女性がイヴリン･ネスビットです。
モンゴメリーが映画などでオーディションをしたら
写真選考と実物との違いがあるとして
多分、違う女性を選んだんじゃないかな？

ダイアナの結婚 Diana’s Wedding です。
冒頭、アンは、本当の薔薇はピンクの薔薇 なんて言いながら
白いリボンをダイアナのブーケに結わえています。
花嫁の付添い人を３度務めたら、花嫁になれないということわざ
もあります。 three times a bridesmaid, never a bride
レイチェル・リンドが、アンとギルバートを見て
なんてお似合いの二人だこと、What a fine-looking pair they are
なんてマリラにささやきかけています。
でも、やっぱり、どんな歌が歌われたかは言及されていませんね。
“After all, the only real roses are the pink ones,” said Anne, as she tied white ribbon around Diana’s bouquet in the westwardlooking gable at Orchard Slope. “They are the flowers of love and faith.”
Diana was standing nervously in the middle of the room, arrayed in her bridal white, her black curls frosted over with the film of her wedding veil. Anne had draped that veil, in accordance with the sentimental compact of years before.
“It’s all pretty much as I used to imagine it long ago, when I wept over your inevitable marriage and our consequent parting,” she laughed. “You are the bride of my dreams, Diana, with the `lovely misty veil’; and I am YOUR bridesmaid. But, alas! I haven’t the puffed sleeves — though these short lace ones are even prettier. Neither is my heart wholly breaking nor do I exactly hate Fred.”
“We are not really parting, Anne,” protested Diana. “I’m not going far away. We’ll love each other just as much as ever. We’ve always kept that `oath’ of friendship we swore long ago, haven’t we?”
“Yes. We’ve kept it faithfully. We’ve had a beautiful friendship, Diana. We’ve never marred it by one quarrel or coolness or unkind word; and I hope it will always be so. But things can’t be quite the same after this. You’ll have other interests. I’ll just be on the outside. But `such is life’ as Mrs. Rachel says. Mrs. Rachel has given you one of her beloved knitted quilts of the `tobacco stripe’ pattern, and she says when I am married she’ll give me one, too.”
“The mean thing about your getting married is that I won’t be able to be your bridesmaid,” lamented Diana.
“I’m to be Phil’s bridesmaid next June, when she marries Mr. Blake, and then I must stop, for you know the proverb `three times a bridesmaid, never a bride,’ ” said Anne, peeping through the window over the pink and snow of the blossoming orchard beneath. “Here comes the minister, Diana.”
“Oh, Anne,” gasped Diana, suddenly turning very pale and beginning to tremble. “Oh, Anne — I’m so nervous — I can’t go through with it — Anne, I know I’m going to faint.”
“If you do I’ll drag you down to the rainwater hogshed and drop you in,” said Anne unsympathetically. “Cheer up, dearest. Getting married can’t be so very terrible when so many people survive the ceremony. See how cool and composed I am, and take courage.”
“Wait till your turn comes, Miss Anne. Oh, Anne, I hear father coming upstairs. Give me my bouquet. Is my veil right? Am I very pale?”
“You look just lovely. Di, darling, kiss me good-bye for the last time. Diana Barry will never kiss me again.”
“Diana Wright will, though. There, mother’s calling. Come.”
Following the simple, old-fashioned way in vogue then, Anne went down to the parlor on Gilbert’s arm. They met at the top of the stairs for the first time since they had left Kingsport, for Gilbert had arrived only that day. Gilbert shook hands courteously. He was looking very well, though, as Anne instantly noted, rather thin. He was not pale; there was a flush on his cheek that had burned into it as Anne came along the hall towards him, in her soft, white dress with lilies-of-the-valley in the shining masses of her hair. As they entered the crowded parlor together a little murmur of admiration ran around the room. “What a fine-looking pair they are,” whispered the impressible Mrs. Rachel to Marilla.
Fred ambled in alone, with a very red face, and then Diana swept in on her father’s arm. She did not faint, and nothing untoward occurred to interrupt the ceremony. Feasting and merry-making followed; then, as the evening waned, Fred and Diana drove away through the moonlight to their new home, and Gilbert walked with Anne to Green Gables.
Something of their old comradeship had returned during the informal mirth of the evening. Oh, it was nice to be walking over that well-known road with Gilbert again!
The night was so very still that one should have been able to hear the whisper of roses in blossom — the laughter of daisies — the piping of grasses — many sweet sounds, all tangled up together. The beauty of moonlight on familiar fields irradiated the world.
“Can’t we take a ramble up Lovers’ Lane before you go in?” asked Gilbert as they crossed the bridge over the Lake of Shining Waters, in which the moon lay like a great, drowned blossom of gold.
Anne assented readily. Lovers’ Lane was a veritable path in a fairyland that night — a shimmering, mysterious place, full of wizardry in the white-woven enchantment of moonlight. There had been a time when such a walk with Gilbert through Lovers’ Lane would have been far too dangerous. But Roy and Christine had made it very safe now. Anne found herself thinking a good deal about Christine as she chatted lightly to Gilbert. She had met her several times before leaving Kingsport, and had been charmingly sweet to her. Christine had also been charmingly sweet. Indeed, they were a most cordial pair. But for all that, their acquaintance had not ripened into friendship. Evidently Christine was not a kindred spirit.
“Are you going to be in Avonlea all summer?” asked Gilbert.
“No. I’m going down east to Valley Road next week. Esther Haythorne wants me to teach for her through July and August. They have a summer term in that school, and Esther isn’t feeling well. So I’m going to substitute for her. In one way I don’t mind. Do you know, I’m beginning to feel a little bit like a stranger in Avonlea now? It makes me sorry — but it’s true. It’s quite appalling to see the number of children who have shot up into big boys and girls — really young men and women — these past two years. Half of my pupils are grown up. It makes me feel awfully old to see them in the places you and I and our mates used to fill.”
Anne laughed and sighed. She felt very old and mature and wise — which showed how young she was. She told herself that she longed greatly to go back to those dear merry days when life was seen through a rosy mist of hope and illusion, and possessed an indefinable something that had passed away forever. Where was it now — the glory and the dream?
“`So wags the world away,’ ” quoted Gilbert practically, and a trifle absently. Anne wondered if he were thinking of Christine. Oh, Avonlea was going to be so lonely now — with Diana gone!

モンゴメリーの末の息子 Stuart Macdonald から聞いたとして、彼の娘（モンゴメリーには孫娘）
Kate Macdonald Butler が Canada’s Globe and Mail へ書いた記事の中で明らかにしました。
The granddaughter of Anne of Green Gables’ author Lucy Maud Montgomery has revealed that her grandmother killed herself with a drugs overdose at the age of 67. LM Montgomery, who died in 1942, is one of Canada’s best-loved authors, and wrote 19 other novels as well as the hugely popular children’s classic.
Kate Macdonald Butler, daughter of Montgomery’s youngest son Stuart Macdonald, made the long-kept family secret public in an article for Canada’s Globe and Mail. “I have come to feel very strongly that the stigma surrounding mental illness will be forever upon us as a society until we sweep away the misconception that depression happens to other people, not us – and most certainly not to our heroes and icons,” she wrote.
Macdonald Butler was also prompted to break the family’s silence by the heightened focus on Montgomery this year, which marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables.
“Despite her great success, it is known that she suffered from depression, that she was isolated, sad and filled with worry and dread for much of her life,” Macdonald Butler wrote. She said that Montgomery had to cope both with “her husband’s mental illness and the restrictions of her life as a clergyman’s wife and mother in an era when women’s roles were highly defined”.
The family, which was consulted before Macdonald Butler wrote her article, has never spoken publicly about the extent of Montgomery’s illness before. Hiterto, it was generally understood that she had died from heart failure. “What has never been revealed is that LM Montgomery took her own life at the age of 67 through a drug overdose. I wasn’t told the details of what happened, and I never saw the note she left, but I do know that it asked for forgiveness,” Macdonald Butler wrote.
Montgomery’s most famous literary creation was the redheaded orphan Anne Shirley, who is sent by mistake to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert on Prince Edward Island, where she declares: “My life is a perfect graveyard of buried hopes.” Macdonald Butler said the lament had always been especially poignant to her, as she imagined her grandmother must have felt the same sadness at times in her life.
“The fictional Anne went on to happiness and a life full of love and fulfilment. My grandmother’s reality was not so positive, although she continues to inspire generations of readers with her books, which reveal her understanding of nature – both in matters of the heart and the world,” she wrote. “I hope that by writing about my grandmother now there might be less secrecy and more awareness that will ease the unnecessary suffering so many people experience as a result of such depressions.”
